You can discover charming towns such as La Orotava and La Laguna, visit the capital city Santa Cruz, follow the famous wine trails, or enjoy the silence of Tenerife's volcanic gorges... This volcanic island, with its strange triangular form, has an area of 2.057 square kilometres with 269 kilometres of coastline. Tenerife is dominated by Spain's highest peak, the 3.718 metre high Teide volcano which towers above the island separating north from south and conferring upon each side curiously different climate. The sun is a predominant feature in all seasons but the North is slightly cooler and greener than the more desert-like South. With two airports, Los Rodeos in the North and Reina Sofía in the South, over 35.000 beds in four and five star hotels and an excellent tourism infrastructure, this Atlantic isle has become the annual holiday destination for over four million visitors. Tenerife has a wealth of interesting and varied things to do. With six courses open and several major projects in the pipeline the island joins the elite world of golfing destinations. From its clean coastal waters it is possible to get a close view of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat and, by contrast, the vibrant, the colourful Carnival in February is among the most spectacular in the world. TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Tenerife, the fascinating island BAHIA PRINCIPE TENERIFE is located in Costa Adeje, on the South Coast of Tenerife. This area owes its tourist success to its climate and the calm of its coastline. In this borough, which includes part of Playa de las Américas, is Barranco del Infierno an impressive example of ravines with narrow vertical walls covered with vegetation. On ledges submerged under the sea a number of ancient burial caves have also been discovered. Adeje embraces various tourist developments such as Callao Salvaje, San Eugenio and Marazul. Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos are a true tourist emporium in the South of Tenerife with its tropical climate, sun and golden beaches as well as the most modern hotel facilities. If to this we add the exciting nightlife in the restaurants, bars and discotheques, you will find the ideal place to spend your next holidays. Without forgetting that from this tourist centre you can visit the most interesting parts of the island on its complete road network. RECOMENDED TOURS: Departure from Puerto de La Cruz: Teide Abaco. Towns and Cities Any tourist trail in the North should include visits to Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, La Orotava, Guía de Isora, Icod de los Vinos, Garachico, Buenavista and Taraconte. In the South Adeje and Arona are worth visiting. Today Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island, a city of 230.000 people with wide avenues, gardens, golden beach and commercial centres boasting many fine shops and boutiques. It is rich in sculptures and monuments and there are a number of museums and theatres. Puerto de la Cruz is the main tourist enclave in the North of the island. It is a picturesque coastal town with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Most popular are the casino and the famous Botanical Gardens which date back to 1.788 and contain plant species from the five continents of the world. The artist César Manrique left his mark on Puerto de la Cruz with the huge Lago de Martiánez, a sea water swimming pool built to his design. The old town of La Orotava has been declared of National Historic Interest which gives an idea of the monuments which are found there, such as La Casa de los Balcones which is an excellent example of typical Canarian architecture. Many hiking trails extend throughout the mountains of La Orotava and stretch up to the Gran Circus de las Cañadas de Teide, a protected National Park. The town's Botanical Gardens are spectacular and include some 3.000 district species, mainly tropical and subtropical plants. The borough also has three beautiful beaches, characterised by their black sand. Arona is also an important tourist destination which includes Playa de las Américas and Costa del Silencio. Los Cristianos, once a small fishing district, has surrendered to the call of tourism although it has also managed to maintain its original charm. La Laguna was the original capital city of the archipelago and is now the religious and university centre where 17th and 18th Century palaces and old stately homes still stand, offering a glimpse of traditional local architecture. Icod de los Vinos with its several thousand year old Dragon tree and Garachico, whose port was destroyed by a volcanic eruption at the beginning of the 18th century are also brimming with history. South Tenerife shows another face, expressed in the majestic cliffs known as Acantilado de los Gigantes and the excellent beaches of Los Cristianos, El Médano and Las Américas, which are bustling with international sunseekers in summertime. Architecture Typical Canary Island architecture, from the stately mansions to the most humble and common abodes, was heavily influenced by Andalusian and Portuguese styles, although its own strength of character shows through. Balconies, interior patios, simple façades and the widespread use of wood, especially the indigenous pine tree, are characteristic of traditional homes in Tenerife. |
